Pet Shop Boys
Formed by Neil Tennant and Chris Lowe, the Pet Shop Boys emerged in the mid-1980s as a leading synth-pop duo. Their breakthrough came with the re-recorded version of “West End Girls” in 1985, which topped charts globally, including in the UK and US.
They followed this with the albums Please (1986), Actually (1987), and Introspective (1988). These releases spawned a string of UK hits like “Opportunities (Let’s Make Lots of Money),” “Suburbia,” “It’s a Sin,” and “Heart.” Their 1987 collaboration with Dusty Springfield, “What Have I Done to Deserve This?,” also became a major success, solidifying their reputation for witty, intelligent pop music. They concluded the decade with their first live tour, the MCMLXXXIX Tour in 1989.
