1984
The year 1984 was dominated by a surge of polished synth-pop. The Tracks year-end chart was filled with acts like Alphaville, Depeche Mode, and Thompson Twins, all of whom masterfully used new technology. Beyond synth-pop, the charts were a global pop and rock invasion, with hits from icons like George Michael and Prince. Several of these songs were tied to major film soundtracks, with hits from films like Ghostbusters and Prince’s Purple Rain.
Top 40 list 1984
(Songs will be added as the collection grows)
Because Trackslistan began broadcasting in September 1984, there was no complete year-end chart for its debut year. Instead, in early December, listeners were invited to vote for their top 10 songs from a pool of 55 tracks that had reached the Top 3 on either Tracks, the predecessor chart “Heta Högen,” or the national sales chart between December 1983 and November 1984. With 6,000 listeners participating, the final result was a special Top 40 list. 39 of the 40 songs are currently available on Spotify.
